Amex Gold vs Platinum (2026)

Both are American Express Membership Rewards cards. The Gold is the everyday earner. The Platinum is the luxury travel card. The question: is the extra $445/yr fee worth it?

⚡ Short answer: Gold earns more on spending. Platinum wins on credits + perks — but only if you use them.

You need to use every credit for this to work. Most people don't.

Bottom line

The Gold Card is better for most people. Its 4x on groceries and dining generates more everyday rewards, and at $250/yr it's easier to justify. The Amex Gold is the top-rated mid-tier card for a reason.

The Platinum Card makes sense if you: travel 6+ times/year (lounge access alone is worth $500+), will use all the credits every year, and want status perks at hotels. At $695 with all credits used it's genuinely worth it — but most people don't use every credit.

Many people hold both: Gold for everyday spending (4x groceries/dining), Platinum for travel perks and lounge access.
